Hello everyone,
I am Nabil from Bangladesh, currently pursuing my doctoral education at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication, University of Gothenburg. Previously, I have undertaken courses from media studies, criminology, and development studies in Sweden as well as in my home country. My PhD study focuses on how gender and sexuality based online harassment and crimes are represented in mainstream news media. Often media reports are criticized for blaming the victim rather than the perpetrator when it comes to sexual offense. Scholars have argued that victims (who in majority cases are females) are held responsible for their own misfortune. Such discourses in media can sometimes reconstitute gender stereotypes and create inequality. However, data from my own project suggests that there have been some positive changes in representing victims of online sexual harassment in media. This summer school can be an opportunity to discuss this issue with other participants and relate this to other areas where media is trying to combat stereotypes and promote gender equality.
I am also interested in sports and training. I regularly do cricket, combat sports, and basic Asanas.
