Hi all, my name is Martine, I’m a ph.d.-student at Journalism Studies at Roskilde University in Denmark. I’m researching gender in relation to becoming and being a journalist. The title of the ph.d. is ‘A true journalist’. Before I became a ph.d.-student I was working as a journalist for seven years at different danish Newsmediaorganisations.
I am writing up my phd this fall and I’m using both my own experiences as a journalist student/journalist and the experiences of the 14 journalist students/journalists (men and women) I have been following and interviewing over a period of three years to generate an analysis that is auto-ethnographic.
When I finish my ph.d., I hope to combine work in both academia and in journalism to generate conversations and actions that put gender in the journalistic profession on the agenda. This is why I have been looking forward to attending the Agemi Summerschool. Before I began as a journalist and journalism researcher I thought that Denmark was ahead concerning norms and values regarding gender equality but my research shows that the way journalists (and academics) think about gender is still rooted in old social gender patterns about what and how men and women are supposed to act.
